Children of the Sea
海獣の子供
Two strange children, Umi and Sora, are found living in the ocean, raised by dugong. When the story begins, they are living in the aquarium, where they are being studied - their bodies are adapted for life in the ocean, and they find it hard to stay hydrated on land. The aquarium operator's daughter finds a lot of common ground with them - she's a bit of a misfit, and can see underwater perfectly, and shows some signs of sensory perceptions beyond what most people show. But the sea children are changing, and may not survive for long if they can't figure out a way to get through the change.
As always, Igarashi's work is like nothing else in manga or literature in general. Extremely spiritual, and very personal. But this book manages to be a lot more commercial than the other things I've read by him - without sacrificing any of the things that draw me to his work he's managed to include a clear and riveting plot and character that should help make it more accessible. Hopefully he'll finally hit the big time.
