Bandai Visual seems to be positioning its Honneamise label as a Criterion Collection for anime, and based on this first release, they may be able to back up that claim. for a single movie is steep by Region 1 DVD standards, but the copious extras warm my obsessive-compulsive heart. The sturdy cardstock box contains:

a cardboard snapper case with separate discs for the feature and the making-of special

a nearly 300-page book of black-and-white storyboards and script (including deleted scenes and occasional notes on what Oshii's sometimes inscrutable chararcters are thinking)

and a 184-page Archives book of interviews, essays, franchise overviews, production materials (mostly B/W, with some color plates), and fun trivia like Oshii's aborted Lupin III movie where the master thief would never appear onscreen.

The Archives also contain the Japanese cast credits that for some reason aren't actually on the movie disc, so I guess sub fans with the regular edition are SOL.

My viewing setup isn't high-end enough for me to talk about the technical aspects of the transfer, but I didn't notice any problems and both audio tracks are in 5.1 surround for those who care.
