Maijin Tantei Nougami Neuro
魔人探偵脳噛ネウロ
- by Matsui Yusei
- published by Shueisha
In a strange way, the opening to Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro mirrors that of Death Note - a demon has consumed all the mysteries in hell, so he comes to earth looking for more. He quickly...enslaves a high school girl and forces her to do his bidding - pretend to be a detective, with him as her assistant. Providing cover.
There's a brief moment when you think this might actually be a mystery series, and then realize it is actually about the artist being as insane as possible. Neuro's ridiculously nightmarish 777 Tools of Hell make it seem like Matsui has a bet with the artist of Muhyo and Roji to see who can come up with the best design each month. When caught, the villains physically transform into the purest expression of their psychotic id. And he's even worked out a perfect way round the inevitable tedium of exposition - surrealist metaphorical counterpoint, from Sazae-san wielding a deadly butcher knife to the Buddha machine gunning the cast of Journey to the West.
Artistically, his compositions routinely bowl over just about everyone in Jump, with elaborate cubist distortions and M.C.Escher like mind-bending frontspieces - and the tankobon design reflects this, with the covers upsidedown and a magic eye picture on the back.
